Nonlinear Diffusion in Magnetized Discharges
In high-density gas discharges in which the electrons, but not the ions, are confined by a magnetic field, the radial density profile is often observed to have a triangular shape, as if the ionization were concentrated on axis. However, such profiles can also result from nonlinear diffusion, in which the diffusion coefficient varies inversely with density.
متن کاملDiffusion in a strongly coupled magnetized plasma.
A first-principles study of diffusion in a strongly coupled one-component plasma in a magnetic field B is presented. As in a weakly coupled plasma, the diffusion coefficient perpendicular to the field exhibits a Bohm-like 1/B behavior in the strong-field limit but its overall scaling is substantially different. The diffusion coefficient parallel to the field is strongly affected by the field as...
متن کاملNonlinear Field Line Random Walk and Generalized Compound Diffusion of Charged Particles in Turbulent Magnetized Plasmas
We present an improved nonlinear theory for the perpendicular transport of charged particles. This approach is based on an improved nonlinear treatment of field-line random walk in combination with a generalized compound diffusion model. The generalized compound diffusion model employed is more systematic and reliable, in comparison with previous theories. Furthermore, the theory shows remarkab...
متن کاملStrongly Nonlinear Vortices in Magnetized Ferrofluids
Nonlinear convective roll cells that develop in thin layers of magnetized ferrofluids heated from above are examined in the limit as the wavenumber of the cells becomes large. Weakly nonlinear solutions of the governing equations are extended to solutions that are valid at larger distances above the curves of marginal stability. In this region, a vortex flow develops where the fundamental vorte...
متن کاملThree-dimensional Simulation of Magnetized Cloud Fragmentation Induced by Nonlinear Flows and Ambipolar Diffusion
We demonstrate that the formation of collapsing cores in subcritical clouds is accelerated by nonlinear flows, by performing three-dimensional non-ideal MHD simulations. An initial random supersonic (and trans-Alfvénic) turbulent-like flow is input into a self-gravitating gas layer that is threaded by a uniform magnetic field (perpendicular to the layer) such that the initial mass-to-flux ratio...
